2021 Holiday Trends: New Survey Data
Can you believe the holidays are already here? We recently got back data from a consumer survey about how they intend to spend the year-end holidays. Here are some of the most interesting things we learned!
Consumers Are Buying Their Holiday Groceries Online
60% of consumers said they would be ordering holiday groceries online, with 79.5% of those saying it would be shipped/delivered and 20.1% saying to pick up in-store. In contrast, in non-holiday periods (reporting on what they had done in the last four weeks), 42.2% of ALL consumers reported picking up groceries in-store, and 45.5% said they had the products shipped/delivered. So, it sounds like consumers will be spending more time relaxing at home and less time in the aisles of the grocery stores this holiday season!
And, They’re Staying Home for the Holidays
58.3% of consumers plan to stay at home for the holidays this year, with 41.8% of those planning to have guests and 16.5% without guests. As being home becomes the new normal and with travel restrictions increasing globally, consumers planning to spend the
holidays in the comfort of their home is expected!
Video Calls are Helping People Connect
Thankfully, people can still connect with their loved ones near and far during the holiday season because of video calls. This year 84.8% of consumers will be using phone or video calls (FaceTime, Zoom, etc.) to connect with friends and family over the holidays.
Traditions Have Changed, And Consumers Are Simplifying
Perhaps the most interesting takeaway is that 71% of consumers’ holiday traditions have changed since COVID-19, with 70% saying they have simplified their holiday traditions (food or activities). For the most part, just about everyone’s holiday routine has been impacted by the pandemic. As we continue to adapt, it seems that spending time with loved ones is the most important gift.
